Description

I remember the first time that I saw an image of this area.  I was very intrigued by the juxtaposition of a Super Nova Remnant (SNR) vs a Planetary Nebula (PN).  I imaged it last year, but that was from my suburban skies and I didn't have the reducer so it required a mosaic as well as mostly narrowband.  Now with the scope in a dark skies observatory, and having a reducer, I wanted to revisit it and try to improve on what I had already done.

I like that I now captured some of the ISM that lies between here and the SNR Sh 2-221 on the left, as it adds some depth.  While these two objects appear similar in size in this image, they are actually much different in size.  Sh 2-221 (SNR) is approximately 2,600 light years distant, while the Planetary Nebula (Sh 2-216) is approximately 390 Light years away.  In addition, there is a small planetary nebula PN G156.4+01.1 in the upper right.  There are also several star formation areas.  The bright nebula in the upper left is Sh 2-217 which contains 4,000 solar masses of material and is in the same complex as Sh 2-219 just below it, and both are active star formation areas.

The birth, life, and death of different size stars is so interesting, and I like that this image shows some of those processes contrasted with each other.

This image is a combination of SHO and RGB.  I used the new NBColourMapper script and Adam Blocks Continuum Subtraction method to add the SHO to the RGB in a more natural color palette.
